Software
I started with a clean machine, so my choices were unlimited for software/OS setup. I checked out a bunch of different front-ends and chose Mamewah. Originally I was planning on just running DOS and using ArcadeOS as my front-end, but ArcadeOS had a few hiccups and pissed me off so I tossed it and looked for an alternative. To be fair to ArcadeOS it appears to be the most full featured arcade front-end out there and if I spent a little more time with it it would have been a good choice. Only having the control panel and limited characters to control all programs limits the choices on which software you can run. Here is my current setup (subject to change):
- Pentium III 550 Mhz, 512 MB RAM, 802.11g wi-fi card. This machine is a spare I had lying around. It's fast enough for all pre 1993 games and NEO-GEO games. I would recommend the fastest machine you can afford, but if all you are interested in is Pac-Man then an old 486 is probably fast enough.
- Windows 98 (arrgghhh!)
- Mamewah
- VNC server - an absolute requirement
- MAME
- ZSNES
- Arcade Jukebox
I'm still not completely satisfied with my software setup. I have been completely Windows free at my house
for over three years and installing Windows was not a happy day for me. I am looking at ways to convert the
arcade machine back to a Linux box. I have been looking at AdvanceMenu for the front-end and xmame for the emulator.
Once the conversion is made I'll post details.
